Building Unity Tour – Goes Virtual!

Defend Democracy – Register & Vote!

The Building Unity Tourlaunched on Saturday, March 7th. We still remember the excitement of the tour kick-off gathering – the powerful opening by Art Shegonee, Call For Peace, Drum and Dance Company; the passionate speeches by Ada Deer, Native American Rights Activist, and local NAACP President, Greg Jones; and the warm welcome we all received by the Ho-Chunk people at their House of Wellness. The next day we were back on the road for a full day of following local organizers suggestions of where to knock on doors to meet and talk with voters in Reedsburg, Baraboo and Sauk City. We ended weekend one with live music, food, conversations, and stimulating presentations at Park Hall in Sauk City. We were ready for 34 more weekends. We were ready to make sure that the people of Wisconsin vote and were able to purposefully share with others in their communities.

Then, in the following days, COVID19 changed everything, including how we go about doing our work. It didn’t change the existential need for the work itself; if anything, it highlights more than ever the importance of things like universal access to healthcare and affordable housing. It also laid bare systemic injustices that affect those who are most vulnerable. We need to continue to unite, listen to the best available science, and care for each other and the planet as a movement.

Building Unity Partners are pulling together and uniting for change. We will not give up! We pushed for public safety and to postpone the spring elections. We have regrouped with our partners to find a way to still take The Tour around the state to bring people together and talk about local issues, building power with unity. Until we can safely take to the streets and townhalls again, we are taking our movement virtual. You can see our first “Virtual Tour” stop here and our second, talking to poll workers about their difficult decision about whether or not to work this year here

In a democracy, power doesn’t reside in Madison, Washington or in our institutions, but in the people. Reaching out across Wisconsin, for eight full months, we will continue to listen, learn, share, and help each other fulfill our civic duty to vote. It is time to rise up and vote our values of democracy, peace, sustainability, and justice for all. We are building unity and facing our global and local challenges – together.

We Need You!
